KITCHENS
What does this mean?
Never install cabinet carcassing if there is residual moisture in the walls supporting it. Walls need to have a maximum moisture reading of 15 % on a damp meter to be safe for installation. If carcassing is installed above this reading, damp issues may develop over time with the carcassing either swelling or developing mould as the moisture creeps from the walls into the board.
Winter is also a difficult time if you are installing timber worktops, solid doors, and
veneer doors. This is when timber is most susceptible to moisture, which could lead to warping. The bonding between the top and its support is also slowed by the cold, increasing the chances of it warping. Once installed, any artificial heating used in winter can cause the timber to contract and shrink prematurely. This can also promote cracking and joint movement.
For built kitchens
Winter is also a time when a lot of holiday homes are locked up. Materials can discolour over long periods when ventilation is limited. If the home is near the coast, the build-up of salt from the atmosphere can also cause surface rust on metal components.
That is why it is wise to wipe down all metal components with a silicone spray before you lock up the house. Curtains and blinds should also be drawn. There are still warm, humid days with good sunlight in winter. Materials exposed to sunlight and poor ventilation in a locked-up home can easily discolour or delaminate.( Continued on page 98)
