TIMBER CONSTRUCTION
Architectural response
Central to the client’ s brief and the architect’ s response was the creation of four separate“ barn” structures, separating the market’ s different functions into halls while providing excellent visitor circulation during market hours. Universal access also forms a major part of the brief, with wheelchair ramps and other facilities catering for visitors with special access needs.
Mahoney says:“ Timber and wood used in the final building consists of a patchwork of different timber forms and applications.”
This included Glulam, and OSB, with the latter used as a ceiling under the coated steel roof. Other features inside the market were installed by the lessee, OZCM, as required by their food stall sub-tenants.
Plinth design in concrete directly over parking garage column, supporting mass timber column. Mass timber column with diagonal bracing.
Adding to Mahoney’ s concept of a patchwork of materials, the building also features recycled brick, uses repurposed shipping containers as part of the main structure, and features a wood-chip floor on top of the concrete surface of the former parking area.
Because there is no plantable ground for greening, an array of plants is housed in large pots and hanging baskets, where they are thriving.
The market is expected to remain on its current site for between five and seven years, according to Mahoney. After that, it can be moved to another location.
All things considered, the project makes a strong environmental statement and represents one of South Africa’ s most notable examples of timber construction.
