ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY
However, what is often overlooked is that the IDoW is not an inflexible system.
While the Scope of Practice Matrix identifies work per category of registration, the policy explicitly allows for controlled flexibility. A registered architectural professional may undertake work beyond their category, provided that appropriate permission has been granted by SACAP. This is enabled through mechanisms such as Special Consent( SC) and, historically, Limited Special Dispensation( LSD).
In practice, many architectural professionals have successfully made use of these pathways. These are not informal allowances, but formal processes through which competence is assessed and recognised. Importantly, such permissions are recorded and can be verified through the Certificate of Competency issued by SACAP.
This reframes the IDoW. Rather than functioning merely as a fixed boundary, it provides a baseline framework. It defines minimum scope, while still allowing for the
extension of practice where competence can be duly demonstrated.
The continued recognition of Recognition of Prior Learning( RPL) reinforces this position. By acknowledging work-based experience alongside formal qualifications, the IDoW contributes to a more inclusive and competitive professional environment.
The 2026 revision therefore delivers a balanced message. It strengthens regulatory clarity and accountability, particularly in relation to complexity and risk, while recognising the evolving and dynamic nature of professional practice.
For architectural professionals, understanding the IDoW requires more than reading a matrix. It requires engagement with the full framework: competencies, complexity, and the mechanisms that enable progression and expanded scope.
Ultimately, the IDoW is not simply about limitation. It is also about alignment between capability, responsibility, and the demands of an increasingly complex built environment.
