The Maritime School of Excellence( MSoE), a firstof-its-kind in the province, provides a conducive learning environment that encourages a healthy study-life balance.
The innovative, climate-resilient architecture is the work of GIARC Designs( Pty) Ltd, voted the Best of Durban Architect 2025, according to Principal Architect Craig Moodley. The construction of the MSoE was expertly carried out by GVK-Siya Zama.
Balancing design aesthetics, community and privacy
The nautical-themed built structure is designed to facilitate interaction, collaboration, physical activity and access to resources, as well as more cloistered areas for private study, and boarding facilities.
“ The architectural style accommodates a balance of open spaces as well as privacy,” says Moodley.“ Public spaces encourage student interaction, while zones of learning, boarding and sporting activities all consider the essential needs of learners to promote a balanced, healthy student life.”
Integrating green solutions and coastal-resilient materials
Moodley adds,“ The built structures utilise a mix of various construction materials to enhance the aesthetics and exhibit modern architecture. Green technologies have been adopted where possible, and sustainable, renewable solutions have also been included, such as solar mechanisms and rainwater harvesting. High-quality finishes enhance the aesthetics and are suitable for the coastal location.”
The external facades comprise mainly a light-coloured facebrick. This is complemented by darker bricks in certain areas, as well as smooth plaster and paint on the upper levels.
The selected‘ soft’ roof-over comprises AZ200 grey-coloured sheeting covering all the buildings. The selection of sheeting was specifically sought to provide the client with the best-suited material for a site approximately 700m from the Durban beachfront.
