The V & A Waterfront’ s Union Castle Building( UCB) is a landmark building steeped in Cape Town’ s history, dating back to 1919 and the days of passenger and mailship travel between Southampton and Cape Town. Its adaptive reuse into a contemporary social hub, while retaining its heritage envelope, is the stuff of architectural and engineering dreams.
The paving pattern of concentric circles, radiating out from the centre-point of Union Square, creates visible connections across the public spaces of the Union Castle Building. This reinforces the convergence concept and place-making in V & A. The concentric paving bands carve and shape the soft landscaping elements and pedestrian movement routes across the site and serve as a visual aid.
