PROJECT
“ Steel construction also facilitates future modifications, as structural strengthening is more feasible compared to concrete. Additionally, the use of bolted connections allows for the disassembly and reuse of components elsewhere within the facility or in new developments. This approach supports sustainability by minimising waste, and avoiding the demolition of concrete elements, which are not typically reusable,” notes Gebremeskel.

According to the report of the structural steel contractor, RSB Contracts, modifying existing structures presents significant challenges, particularly when introducing additional loads such as solar panels, HVAC systems, or extensive piping within the roof space.
Thorough analysis of existing structural elements is essential to assess their capacity and determine the need for strengthening. The interaction between original members and any supplementary reinforcements must be carefully evaluated to ensure safe load transfer and structural integrity.
“ However, structural analysis alone does not resolve the challenge of increasing capacity. The successful modification of the existing roof system was critical to enabling equipment installation within the operational warehouse. This required a solution that balanced efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
“ Advanced software analysis and 3D modelling were employed to design truss modifications that could accommodate increased loading. These designs were informed by the extended roof structure, allowing for future proofing and strategic recommendations on where additional loads could be safely applied to the existing framework.” – RSB Contracts, Steel Awards 2025.
Personal thanks are due to Stephen Atkinson and Geraldine Sew of R & L Architects, for taking time and trouble to supply additional information and images, over and above those provided to the Steel Awards 2025 judges. Interestingly, the first iteration of the WWDC, which broke ground in 2005, was their first project worked on together for the practice – Ed.
