INTERIOR DESIGN

Q

Known for creating spaces that influence human behaviour and foster connection, please share with readers how design thinking integrates with emotional intelligence in your vision for the future of the workspace. KW: The new office isn’ t just a place you have to go – it’ s a place you want to be. Employees come to the office to connect, collaborate, and feel a sense of belonging.
How do you implement this

Q evolution from a design perspective, incorporating both wellness and productivity? KW: Productivity now depends on how a space supports human energy and mental focus, rather than simply on occupancy metrics.

For example, at Kim Williams Design( KWD), we adopt a behavioural approach. We propose environments that deliberately influence how people feel and perform. We consider sensory impact: light, acoustics, materiality, and spatial flow all affect the nervous system. When these elements are harmonised, people naturally engage and produce better work.

Q recent projects that demonstrate this approach. KW: Our First Technology project exemplifies this well. The brief was to transform a traditional corporate office into a lively, adaptable workspace that supports hybrid working and wellbeing. We incorporated zones for focus, collaboration, and relaxation – each with its own lighting setting and acoustic environment. Textured finishes, greenery, and warm tones softened the corporate feel, while modular furniture allowed the space to be flexible for different work modes. The result is a workplace that feels human. It has become efficient yet empathetic.

A balance of accuracy and comfort where wellness principles align with clinical excellence for the Enamel Clinic.
Shifting to a healthcare setting, our work at Enamel Clinic in De Waterkant shows how design can combine accuracy with emotional reassurance. Although it’ s a healthcare environment, the same principle applies to office design: when users feel relaxed and grounded, performance and trust increase.
