Welcome to the Tiny Homes - Designs for Micro Living digital magazine which presents the Tiny
Home Design Project work completed by the 14 students in my 2017-18 Architectural Drawing & Design
II class. The idea for this project came to me following a workshop in the Summer of 2016 called Camp
T&I (Trade & Industry). Sponsored by the CTAE Resource Network of the Georgia Dept. of Education,
the annual event is where Career Tech Educators gather for professional development and sharing best
practices. I had an opportunity to meet briefly with the Construction teachers and I ask them what my
design students could design that they might want to build in their courses. Tiny Houses were the
recommendation!
On my way home from that event I started thinking about the possibility of building a Tiny Home
for my own retirement living. Over the Winter Break that year I developed the plans for the model you
see illustrated on the cover. In June of this year I began its construction , and resolved to launch the
Tiny Home Design Project for my 3 rd year students this Fall.
After research as a class, we decided to use a 2
4 ft. tandem axle trailer as the foundation of
choice and the conceptual design process began. Lots of collaboration and feedback between students
helped generate the 14 unique designs you’ll find here. A brief visit to my construction site for a ‘grand
tour’ of the framing and plumbing/electrical rough-in progress gave students an additional appreciation
for the scope of what they were designing.
Following conceptual design work in Autodesk Inventor ® where floors, walls and openings were
modeled, and 3D print outs produced, students moved to Autodesk Revit ® for development of their
complete plans. Those plans are available for download from links on the model pages. There is no
charge for downloading plans, but if you find one you 'd l ike to build, please send a tax deductible
donation of $50.00 payable to McIntosh High School Construction at the address above.
Thanks for your interest and support!
