Tin Hted High School - Myanmar | Page 6

Background

Tin Hted High School is located in Tin Hted Village, Pin Laung Township, Shan State, Myanmar. Tin Hted Village is located about 122 km from the Shan State capital of Taunggyi in Eastern Myanmar and sits atop a mountain at an elevation of 1,620 metres. Pin Laung Township has a population of 2,583 residents and is home to 490 households. The vast majority of the population is dependent on subsistence agriculture, plantation work, and trade for income. The area is severely challenged by a lack of alternative livelihoods.

Established in 1960, Tin Hted High School had 4 school buildings with a total of 19 classrooms. Of the 4 school buildings, 3 were well constructed and are still in good shape, however, the other building was a temporary medal shack that was unhygienic and not a suitable learning environment. This temporary structure had a zinc metal sheet roof and walls with a dirt floor. The interior became unbearably hot during the hot season and frigidly cold during the cold season, creating an unconducive and unhealthy atmosphere for teaching and learning. The building was in dire need of replacement.

To improve this pressing situation, we supported Tin Hted High School by constructing one new concrete building to replace the temporary structure. In February 2019, the construction of the new school building began!
