BE A GOOD SPORT As a community we should all be committed to
promoting the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play at all
athletic activities. We should oppose instances and activities that run counter to the
best values of athletic competition in order to ensure the well-being of all individual
players. We should expect acceptable standards of good citizenship and propriety
with proper regard for the rights of others.
We should be committed to the belief that schools participating in inter-scholastic
athletic activities should be held responsible for the conduct of their players,
coaches, faculty, parents and any other spectator.
A few things to keep in mind as a fan:
• Keep cheering positive. There should be no profanity or degrading language or
gestures.
• Avoid actions that offend visiting teams or individual players.
• Show appreciation of good play by both teams.
• Learn the rules of the game in order to be a better-informed spectator.
• Treat all visiting teams in a manner in which you would expect to be treated.
• Accept the judgment of coaches and offi cials.
• Be good role models for athletes.
A little common sense goes a long way toward making the sports experience a good
one for the players and the spectators.
he was a writer, assistant news editor and features editor for the Bi-College News
at Haverford and Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania. He grew up in Plainfi eld and started
playing Barre Youth Sports Association soccer when he was 5. He worked for
the U-32 Chronicle for three-and-a-half years, and now a lot of his high school
classmates have children on local varsity teams.
JEB WALLACE-BRODEUR has been a photographer at The Times Argus
for about 25 years. He grew up in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High
School and Middlebury College. He ran cross-country and track in high school
and was on the ski and golf teams, as well. He is self-taught, and learned the craft
after receiving a camera as a college graduation present. He enjoys meeting and
photographing so many wonderful members of our central Vermont community.
JOSH KUCKENS started as a photographer with The Times Argus about a year
ago. Josh discovered the paper when he was having his photograph taken by former
staffer Stefan Hard. Starting out as a freelancer, he has become a staff photographer,
and some of the year’s most memorable images are his. He lives in Hardwick.
