Football: Area coaches take a look ahead
By KRISTOPHER MARTIN
CORRESPONDENT
Spaulding football coach Bob Lamb
remains “cautiously optimistic,” when it
comes to predictions for his football team
this fall. Just a few short years ago, the Crim-
son Tide didn’t win a single game, but since
Lamb’s installment, the team has improved
upon its lot in each successive year. It’s also
worth noting that the player turnout over the
summer bodes well for the upcoming season
and in to the future.
The first step to any successful football
team is finding a way to fill out a roster with
kids who want to go from playing football, to
becoming football players.
“I think when we broke out in to groups
yesterday, we had sixteen linemen,” Lamb
said. “It’s the biggest group I’ve had in my
years as coach. We have a pretty strong class
of 16-18 freshmen as well. We’ve got plenty of
bodies, but the freshman class doesn’t have
a lot of size – we have a lot of skill players.
We’ve got some kids who have good hands,
we’ve got some height at wide receiver and
some speed in the backfield.”
Taking a short drive down the Barre-Mont-
pelier road to East Montpelier, U-32 coach
Brian Divelbliss’ Raider team is looking a
bit higher than “cautiously optimistic”. After
graduating just three players from last year’s
squad Divelbliss believes his core group of
seniors have a real shot at contention for the
Division-II title. Well known throughout the
Vermont football ranks as a team that has
been consistently good for a long time, U-32
doesn’t ever seem to rebuild. Instead, they
reload.
“We’ve got 15 to 16 seniors on the squad
this year,” Divelbliss said. We have a mature
offensive line that knows their assignments,
and with the experience we can insert new
things into the system we run to force teams
to match up differently. Moving up a division,
we know we’re going to see teams switch on
the fly and I think we’ll be able to counter
some of the defensive schemes we’ll see, and
at the same time put some stuff in that maybe
they’re not ready for.”
Divelbliss believes that with a core group
of seniors that includes senior Logan Wolf
at quarterback teamed with Danny Green,
Zach Schneider and Hayden Roberge at skill
positions will allow multiple looks offensively.
Their experience in the offensive certainly
counts, and with a mixed group of talented
juniors and sophomores as well as 10 incom-
ing freshman there is plenty of depth and
opportunities to carve out significant playing
time.
Th e young guys are catching on real quick,
and we’re happy with the progression” Divel-
bliss said.
