out as a huge challenge. Spaulding will also play home-
and-away matches against Middlebury, Missisquoi, Mount
Abraham and Vergennes.
One of the biggest changes for Moran’s squad this year
will be not relying on All-State goalie Brad Romeo, who
was a four-year starter. Romeo kept the Tide in a lot of
matches where they were clearly overmatched, and Parker
Spaulding may await a similar challenge.
MONTPELIER
Last year the Solons were a well-oiled machine entering
playoffs, giving eventual state champion Lake Region its
toughest battle of the season.
Montpelier lost that quarterfinal in overtime, 2-1, and
the Rangers outscored opponents 7-0 the rest of the way.
Nearly half of Montpelier’s starting lineup graduated,
but the fact that the Solons had the champs on the ropes
should be encouraging for the 2017 squad.
“We are not who we were then, and they are returning
10 or 11 guys who are a year older and a year stronger. I
think they will be super strong,” Basa said.
One thing Basa is not worried about is scoring. The
crew of seven returning seniors includes a handful of
offensive threats, led by Omeed Fallahi and Davor Vukoja.
Fallahi is one of the top sprinters in Division III and times
his runs on the pitch masterfully. Vukoja also has wheels
and loves to challenge opponents and dance around the
ball, especially inside the penalty box.
