The trips can be physically demanding, so she
practices yoga and takes long, hilly walks to pre-
pare.
Her husband prefers to stay home, so she’ll see
the sights with friends or on her own.
He tells people she’s visited close to 90 countries,
but it only seems like that because she sometimes
makes return trips to favorite places.
“He thinks I’m nuts,” she says.
One of Dowdle’s favorite parts of the world is
Africa – she’s been to 10 nations on the continent,
including Rwanda, where she got up close with
mountain gorillas.
“It was the best money I spent…just absolutely
fabulous,” she recalls, her eyes wide. “The largest
silverback in the world just walked right by me.”

Dowdle says she’s drawn to this form of travel
because she learns more than she would with a
guide book.

“It’s addictive...I want to go to Namibia for one
more safari.”
She encourages retirees interested in adventure
travel to make sure they’re in shape and keep an
open mind.
“Mark Twain said, ‘Travel is fatal to preju-
dice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness,’” Dowdle
says. “People are people everywhere.”
