Makeup by makeup artist Brynn Chesney
Model Jo-Ann Dale , who is in her 50s , does not wear makeup every day . Makeup artist Brynn Chesney kept her look super natural using a lightweight foundation . No features were played up to illustrate “ less is more .”
Terri Nanney
For model Earrie Mosley , 70 , makeup artist Brynn Chesney did lash extensions . A cream eye shadow was applied to play up her eyes , blush on top of her cheeks and a red / pink lipstick applied to add a pop of color .
For model Terri Nanney , 70 , makeup artist Brynn Chesney kept her makeup subtle everywhere else and played up her red lips . Blush was placed on top of Nanney ’ s cheeks , and her lashes were curled and finished with mascara . using a waterproof gel liner instead of liquid .
“ We don ’ t want any harsh lines anywhere so smudge your liner out with a little eye shadow in the same color as your liner ,” she said .
Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler , starting at the root , before putting on mascara because you start to lose a lot of eyelashes as you grow older , Chesney said .
Also , be choosy with your mascara formula to prevent flaking . Some thickening formulas do not work on older women but look clumpy . Look for formulas that are made with conditioning serums and designed for mature lashes .
“ There is no formula that is going to work for everybody ,” she said . “ You will just have to experiment and see what works best for you .”
She also recommends using powder under the eyes , so your mascara does not run .
Don ’ t Forget Your Brows and Your Lips !
Take it easy on your eyebrows and avoid the heavy brow look to give your brows a more natural look , Chesney suggests . Eyebrow pencils and a tinted brow gel are the easiest to use .
“ When using your brow pencil , just fill in your eyebrows and arches with hairlike strokes ,” she noted . “ Just follow your natural brow shape .”
As for lip color , people should go with their own personal color of choice .
“ People are really choosy about their lip color , so when I am doing someone ’ s makeup , I ask them what lip color they are gravitating toward . It is really just their preference ,” she said , noting one of the 70-yearold models wears a red lipstick every day of her life .
“ I think that is really bold of her and it is great ,” she said .
Chesney suggests staying away from matte lips but prefers a more satin finish formula . Definitely use a lip liner to accentuate the lips .
“ I do love lip liner ,” she said . “ I like lipsticks that glide on easily and are more hydrating .”
Be Careful with the Powder
You can use a setting powder to finish off your makeup , but keep in mind that going too heavy with powder can end up causing your makeup to look cakey and textured , especially if the powder settles into lines and creases .
Chesney recommends keeping finishing powder light .
“ A light sweep of translucent powder will set everything in place ,” she added .
Also , make sure all cream products that you intend to use are applied before you apply the setting powder , she recommended .
Highlight Your Best Feature
Chesney said women over 50 should remember to have fun with their makeup . Choose one feature you love about yourself and play off of that .
“ Don ’ t be afraid to play up your favorite thing about yourself whether it is your eyes , cheeks or lips ,” she said .
For example , wear a bold lipstick , but keep the eyes and face simple . Or wear fake eye lashes and pair it with a more natural lip color .
Also , “ if you ’ re wanting to try something new with your makeup , the best time to try it is when you get home before you wash your face for the night ,” she said .
“ If you are more natural and you are not used to wearing eyelashes every day , don ’ t just start wearing eyelashes ,” she added . “ Practice putting on lashes or the bold lipstick that you ’ re not sure you will like or not .”
