It comes down to their personal preference ,” Chesney said .
For a little fun , you can mix in some lighter , subtle highlights or add some balayage or ombre color blends to soften your look and give you a more youthful appearance .
For African-American women over age 50 , shoulder-length curls , wavy short locks , cropped pixie cuts and wavy bobs are all popular choices for more classic looks .
If you wear your hair curly , try to transition to softer curls because they are not as trendy and look more timeless , she said .
Black is an easy , low-key choice in hair color for African-American women , but you can add some reddish or brown highlights to soften the look . Brown hair color , both dark and light shades , offers a softer alternative .
Following the lockdown from the coronavirus last spring , many women chose to grow out their gray hair rather than to color it , Chesney noted .
“ A lot of people came in with quarantine roots , and they said I might as well go all gray , and I love that ,” she said .
You can either wear your hair all gray or add some silver highlights to salt-andpepper hair to create a softer , younger look , she said . Or , you can add all-over blonde color .
“ Grays make the prettiest blondes because there is no pigment on the hair when you color it ,” Chesney said .
No matter what color you choose , you should try to keep your hair healthy looking as you age , she suggests . Use a round brush and blow dryer to smooth your hair instead of using a straightener or curling iron . Also , do not turn the heat up high on curlers or curling irons because it is not good for your hair .
Chesney said her best advice is to remember to be yourself and choose a hairstyle that makes you happy . T
“ If you are wanting your hair longer and fuller but do not want to take the time to grow it out , then hair extensions are also an option . They are so easy to get and easy to take care of .”
