Timeless hairstyles for women
For women over 50 , hairstyle plays a large part in the image of how they see themselves and how they feel others see them . “ I don ’ t think you have to have a certain hairstyle when you get to a certain age . I feel like your hairstyle is based on your personal preference , or whatever makes you feel like yourself ,” said Brynn Chesney , a cosmetologist and freelance hair and makeup artist who lives in Chattanooga , Tenn .
Chesney , a native of Meridian , often does freelance work through downtown ’ s Indigo Child Salon . In a recent interview , she offered these hairstyle tips for women over 50 to help them keep looking younger .
For women in their 50s and 60s , longer bobs , collar-length cuts and layered shoulder-length styles tend to be popular , she said . Pixie cuts are the go-to style for many women in their 70s and 80s who want a simple , yet elegant look . A lot of women in their 80s still get the weekly roller sets although those short curls tend to give away a woman ’ s age .
“ For a woman , whose hair is starting to thin , I would definitely suggest cutting it shorter to thicken up their hair ,” she said . “ Maybe add some layers around the face .”
She recommends using a thickening shampoo and conditioner , such as DALLAS Biotin Thickening Shampoo by R + Co to make the hair look healthier and fuller despite the thinning .
“ If you are wanting your hair longer and fuller but do not want to take the time to grow it out , then hair extensions are also an option . They are so easy to get and easy to take care of ,” she said .
Thicker hair , on the other hand , looks great curly , wavy or in straight tresses . It can be a long bob , cut to the shoulders or worn long down the back .
If your hair is thick enough , then go with layers for sure ,” she said . “ It will give you some movement and add life to your hair .”
Bangs are also an option for women who may want to try something new and fresh .
“ I love bangs ,” she said . “ I like to see movement around your face , so I am all for the bangs and how they frame the face .”
