Spirit of altruism : I was raised by my parents to invest in others . That occurred through regular participation in church and mission activities , but it was also the product of their personal decision for us to focus on ways to use our talents and gifts to serve others throughout the day . For example , I had an uncle who was injured serving overseas during the Korean War . His last years were spent in a long-term care facility near my home and we made regular visits to see him . While we were at the facility , we would also visit with many of the residents and would do everything from play checkers and share music to read scripture . While it wasn ’ t particularly exciting for me as a child , as I reflect on those experiences , I realize they were transformational .
Importance of giving back to the community : We tend to get wrapped up in what ’ s important to us , personally , and view others and their challenges in broad and often inaccurate terms . Serving others allows us to know and appreciate people for who they are . It helps me remember that God created each one of us for a purpose .
An aspect of a volunteer experience really enjoyed : My favorite volunteer experience is related to where I work . Each year Meridian Community College engages in My College Cares , which is a one-day community service blitz . On that one day we will send out 1,200-plus faculty , staff , and students to serve our community . Projects include everything from reading to school children to painting , landscaping , and cleaning . That kind of commitment to a community is highly unusual for a college or university , but the benefits to those who serve are incredible .
Our community ’ s greatest asset : I ’ ve never known a community so willing to take care of each other . From MCC to the countless organizations and churches here in Meridian / Lauderdale County , people genuinely care about others and are willing to be there when needed . It ’ s been a little more than a year , but when I had my heart attack and surgery , I was overwhelmed by the prayers and support from , literally , all corners of this community . I see that mindset and those actions taking place daily .
Motto or favorite quote : When I talk to people about college , and they say things like , “ it ’ ll take too long ,” I will often reply with , “ in two years it ’ ll be in two years !” ( my motto ). I know people have obligations and that time is an important factor , but I also know the value of finishing a degree or certificate typically makes that extra time worthwhile . Time passes and you can use it to open doors or “ in two years ” you can find yourself exactly where you are now .
