CAPITAL CARAVAN OWNERS RIPPED OFF
A Time to Roam survey of state and territory vehicle registration costs has
found caravan owners in the ACT are slugged the highest rates in Australia.

Caravan owners in the ACT are paying
almost seven times as much to register
their caravans as those in Victoria
Victoria and South Australia
have by far the best deal,
not only having the lowest annual
fees, but also having a flat rate

Rego charges in the ACT are so
high that a typical Canberra caravan
owner pays as much in one year as
the same caravan owner in Victoria
would pay over seven years.
Canberra Club Secretary Kathy Barrett says
the rates are excessive and seemed even
more unreasonable given the ACT has the
smallest road network in the country.
“It’s ridiculous when you consider every
time you go away you leave the ACT – in
fact we only have to drive ten kilometres in
either direction and we’re off ACT roads.”
Ms Barrett said the exorbitant
slug on caravan owners caused
difficulties for many who were either
pensioners or self-funded retirees.
She said Canberra caravan
enthusiasts were going to great
lengths to avoid the tax slug.
“A lot of people buy caravans in Victoria
and get them registered there. If they
have relatives in Victoria, they get the
renewals sent there to avoid paying the
excessive ACT fees,” Ms Barrett said.
