Canberra Club Secretary Kathy Barrett says the rates are excessive and seemed even more unreasonable given the ACT has the smallest road network in the country. “It’s ridiculous when you consider every time you go away you leave the ACT – in fact we only have to drive ten kilometres in either direction and we’re off ACT roads.” Ms Barrett said the exorbitant slug on caravan owners caused difficulties for many who were either pensioners or self-funded retirees. She said Canberra caravan enthusiasts were going to great lengths to avoid the tax slug. “A lot of people buy caravans in Victoria and get them registered there.
