Backround Information

Originally, the war in Yemen started the day Mr. Hadi became the president of Yemen. Mr Hadi was supposed to bring change and stability to Yemen. In reality, he did just the opposite. Yemen was already suffering from attacks by al-Qaeda, however Mr Hadi brought a whole other set of problems with him when he became President. For example his governement an increase in corruption, unemployment, and food insecuritie. All of these problems directly affected Yemen's civilians but not those in power. It is because of this that rebel attacks increased as conditions worsened.

The Houthi rebels attacking Mr. Hadi’s regime were supporters of the previous President Saleh. They eventually took over the capital of Sanaa. At this point the conflict escalated as Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Arab nations believed that the Houthi rebels were backed by regional Shia nation Iran. To restore Mr. Hadi, and push back perceived Iranian influence in Yemen, Saudi and other Gulf countries, supported by the US, UK, and France, attacked the Houthi in early 2015. With 6,800 people killed and another 35,000 injured since March 2015, many Yemeni people have tried to escape the country as refugees.

How did the war start?

The war in Yemen all started the day Mr. Hadi, became the president of Yemen. Mr Hadi becoming President was supposed to bring change and stability to Yemen, when in reality it did just the opposite. Yemen was already suffering from attacks from al-Qaeda, however Mr Hadi brought a whole other set of problems with him when he became President such as:

increase in corruption, increased in unemployment rates and increase in food insecurities. All of these problems directly affect the people of Yemen, not the people in power. It is because of this that the amount of rebel attacks increased as soon as food insecurity increased.

All these attacks and bombings caused by Yemeni rebellions, created the Yemen Civil War.

Yemen being at war with itself caused other countries (Saudi Arabia) to intervene. This caused even more deaths, bombings and casualties since Saudi-Arabia and the United States sent air-strikes into Yemen.

All of these problems going on in Yemen caused the people to want to leave their country, which is how the Yemeni Refugee Crisis started.
