beauty and the beast
It was always going to be a gamble, recreating the beloved animated classic, but Disney appear to be bound and determined to make as many live-action “reboots” as possible.
I admittedly did enjoy the film, but it was chiefly due to groundwork already laid down by the animated version. The film has a big-name cast, gorgeous visuals and an amazing score, but to me there was something in it that lacked heart. Maybe it was the blandness of the main characters or the fact they tried to fit so much into the story, but they did it better in 1991.
LA LA LAND
It’s ironic that for a musical, one of the least memorable things about La La Land is the songs. Ask me to name any and I’d come up totally blank. In fact, looking at La La Land as a whole, very little of the movie makes an impact at all. It tries to dazzle you with dancing and flashy visuals, but when the plot offers you nothing, even the most whimsical fantasy sequences had me impatiently fidgeting for something relevant to happen. And with the now-infamous Oscar snafu, this movie looks doomed to be remembered for one thing – it didn’t win.
