FATHER JOHN MISTY - 'PURE COMEDY'

“‘I used to really like this guy / This new shit really kinda makes me wanna die.’”

Quite the opposite - 'Pure Comedy' is without a doubt, one of the highlights of Tillman's career. Admittedly, it doesn’t seem that different from his debut 'I love you honey bear' on the outside - but there is so much more when you step inside; you come to realize that its more clear cut and perhaps more subdued instrumentally. It is a difficult listen - the albums 13 minute climax "leaving LA" seems off-putting but is a carefully crafted summary of the album almost. Not to mention, the 1800 word essay discussing the relevance of entertainment, politics and human nature of course, that Tillman sent to his fan club upon announcing the album - which gives the album a whole new lease of life.

GOLDFRAPP - 'SILVER EYE'

Every new album from Goldfrapp arrives with some excitement. Which direction will they take this time? What will Alison and Will have dreamed up on this occasion? 2013’s ‘Tales of Us’ is an album which saw them return to a soundscaping and storytelling style and I for one was glad to find something with teeth appear on Silver Eye.

This album has more in common with Black Cherry than any of their other albums. They’ve let themselves have fun, and more importantly they’ve let themselves be angry. There is sexiness and danger in this album. The heightened emotions and passions on display are woven seamlessly with their dreamy synth-style. This really is a fantastic album.
