Timber iQ October - November 2019 // Issue:46 | Page 4

WOOD FOR THOUGHT WOOD FOR THOUGHT Learning every day T here is an age old saying that goes, ‘You learn something new every day’. I’ll be the first to admit that I sometimes take the saying for granted. While working on this issue of Timber iQ, I had such an encounter. There was a feature about edge banding machinery, and I had absolutely no idea what this was. As I did the research and spoke to different people, I eventually got a better understanding of the edge banding process. It might not be a big deal to many, but I can honestly say I had a light bulb moment – especially when I realised that I come into contact with edge banding every day, even my desk at work. Then, my wardrobe, kitchen units and other wood products at home also have edging around them – and I see and deal with them every day. Not only did I learn what edge banding is, but I also learnt about the entire process and materials used during this process. With that, I discovered what causes the edging to detach and why I could never glue it back on. I’d give the reason, but that would just be spoiling the article, so, to find out (if you don’t already know) on page 22. There are loads of other interesting features I hope you will enjoy in this issue. I learnt a thing or two when I was writing these too. We feature two interesting projects – a local and an international one, so look out for those. Our profile for this issue is Grier Fisher, where he shares a lot of his knowledge gained in the industry over the years. As a young person new to the timber industry, getting input from the different experts in the industry is really encouraging, because each story I work on, I’m finding that there is so much potential for timber construction in South Africa. With every issue of Timber iQ, my hope is our local industry gets one step closer to realising its full potential. And, of course, I look forward to learning even more with the next issue. As always, happy reading and enjoy! Dineo Phoshoko Staff writer 2 OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2019 // 2 OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2019 // www.timberiq.co.za
