WOOD FOR THOUGHT Timber polishes its innovation I t is truly amazing to see what can be produced from big pieces of wood. Seeing new and innovative designs in the timber construction industry is like watching a baby developing through different stages. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the industry raises the bar with new and exciting innovations. Its easy to think of innovation specifically in the context of a completed timber structure or product. The beauty about innovation is that it breaks all boundaries and can come in different forms. Be it a software used in timber construction, new technology for timber equipment or even clever ways of building with timber. This issue features some interesting articles that touch on innovation in the industry. Firstly, our featured cover for this month is Harris Sawing Equipment which introduces their new Trucut saw blades. We all know that there is a lot of sawing involved in timber and it makes perfect sense to have the best sawing equipment to get the best results. This article covers how their new saw blades are hugely beneficial to the industry. 2 JUNE / JULY 2019 // Our two projects also look at innovative designs using timber - the local project covers the design and manufacture of tables in Knysna. The second is an international project where we gain an insight into the construction of the new Bloomberg headquarters in London. One of my favourite sections of the magazine is the Talking Timber section as this is where industry insiders share their insight into a particular topic in the industry; I often learn a great deal from this regular column. This month we hear from Dolphin Bay which shares some useful tips on how to ensure that your timber’s life endures for as long as possible. It’s always good to get feedback from the industry, so please don’t hesitate to drop me an email and let me know what’s on your mind. If you prefer to call instead, then go right ahead.
