Doing good with wood The timber construction industry continues to see fresh innovative designs which break the boundaries of timber construction across the world; one of those innovative designs is the Alfriston School in Buckinghamshire. By Wood for Good and Duggan Morris Architects | Photos by Jack Hobhouse D uggan Morris Architects was commissioned to create a new pool for the Alfriston School in Buckinghamshire, which could also be made available to the local community to generate extra revenue. The design brief had the children who attend Alfriston at its core with a focus on creating a peaceful environment for pupils. Alfriston School is a state-funded special needs school which offers full time education and boarding for girls. The school accommodates girls between the ages of 11 and 18 years old who have different needs and disabilities. PREFABRICATION AND CLT COMPONENTS Alfriston School’s swimming pool roof encompasses clever and innovative designs using timber as a building material. In addition, the entire building represents a contemporary structure in the 21st century. The roof of the school’s swimming pool was constructed using different building systems including prefabricated timber and cross laminated timber (CLT).
