PROJECTS The cottage that uses timber innovatively. The Wooden Wing On the shores of Lac Supérieur in Quebec's Laurentians sits a large cottage − a stunning homage to timber. By v2com | Photographs by David Marien-Landry T he Wooden Wing is a large cottage that is perched on a sizeable outcrop of granite bedrock, with a commanding yet intimate view of the lake on one side and Mont Tremblant on the other. This living space sits on a large, semi-polished concrete slab raised slightly above the natural outcrop, placing the house in close contact with its natural surroundings, from which it is separated by distinctive clear, glass walls. A white cedar roof – the wooden wing – boasts ample eaves overhanging the glassed-in volume, protects the living spaces from excessive direct sunlight and provides shelter for outdoor sitting areas, which extend the interior rooms organically. Perpendicular to the wooden wing, a nearly opaque two-story volume holds the house’s service areas and bedrooms. The house plays on the duality of openness and opacity, day spaces and night spaces. The use of a limited palette of materials – white cedar, polished concrete, black aluminium and transparent glass – both inside and out help erase the boundaries between architecture and nature. 24 JUNE / JULY 2018 // The interior also has wooden features from top to bottom.
