MAINTENANCE
Maintenance of pergolas and outdoor furniture is
extremely important because of the exposure to a variety
of weather conditions, which may damage them. It is
therefore necessary for pergolas and outdoor furniture to
be treated and maintained to protect them from damage or
exposure to the elements. Deane explains that
maintenance of pergolas or outdoor furniture depends of
the type of timber the products are made from. “If it is
plantation timber, then it will need a preservative. This
acts as a fungicide and pesticide,” he says.
Protecting the timber from different weather conditions,
which can be extreme at times, requires the timber to be
sealed. “Apply a sealant, not a varnish. The UV rays of the
sun and the absorption of water causes extreme expansion
and contraction, hence cracking or bleaching of the
timber,” adds Deane. He adds that many people make the
mistake of using varnish when they shouldn’t. “It looks
great in the beginning, however after one season the
varnish itself would start to weather and peel off. This is a
major labour intensive problem to sort out, with scrapping
and sanding.
“For pergolas, always ensure that when you cut treated
timber, make sure that the cut end does not go in the
ground. If you don’t want the weathered look, always seal
timber, you will get more life out of it,” Deane explains. For
outdoor furniture Deane suggests being aware of irrigation
systems as they can dampen the timber. “This will reduce
the life span if not sealed and treated adequately.”
Woodoc managing director Frikkie Greeff, agrees with
Deane, adding that the furniture must be sealed with the
best sealer possible. He adds that another mistake people
often make is using inferior products to seal the timber

and then expecting it to last. “If properly cared for, outdoor
furniture can last virtually forever. If not properly cared
for, it will fall apart within a few years,” he says.
Another crucial factor when it comes to maintaining
pergolas and outdoor furniture, is following the
manufacturer’s instructions. Using a timber maintenance
product incorrectly will not achieve the intended purpose
of protecting the timber. “If in doubt, ask. Woodoc has a
comprehensive customer care system, from a toll-free line
to online help,” adds Greeff.
With winter around the corner, Greef highlights the
change of season will have a significant impact on pergolas
and outdoor furniture. “It is good practice to inspect
outdoor furniture before the start of the summer to ensure
that the protective coating is still in good condition and do
maintenance if necessary.”
Maintaining timber is very important to ensure that it
lasts, especially if it is going to be used outside. It does not
matter what pergola structure or outdoor furniture you
choose, maintenance is very important. Different types of
timber products require different maintenance that is
suitable for both the product and timber.
