PROJECTS Architects made the design flexible for future renovations. balance between service efficiency, customer experience and aesthetical appeal provides an interesting challenge for everyone at the firm. “Every store space has its own context, flow of people and site conditions that need to be analysed and interpreted to produce the optimal design solution. This coupled with the quick turnaround time required on these projects make them fast-paced and exciting.” WHY AND HOW THE TIMBER WAS SELECTED • Kiaat was chosen based on the timber properties. It works well with hand and machine tools, glues well and can be stained and polished to a good finish. Table tops were built and not ordered, giving each table a unique look. Tops were oiled to bring out the natural colour of each piece. • Poplar was chosen for its aesthetic and colour. It contrasts well with the oiled kiaat and it is less expensive, and the applications call for less expensive timber. • Pine is cheap and readily available in purlin sections and standard sized purlins were used to construct the bulkhead, which was left unfinished as it is above the eyeline. 28 APRIL / MAY 2018 // Design inspiration drew from urban cities around the world.
