LAPA CONSTRUCTION
Leeroy Deane , one of the owners of The Pole Yard , explains that a lapa is usually constructed with treated timber poles , either eucalyptus ( gum ) or pine poles , whichever is readily available in your area . Poles are used as this creates the aesthetic appeal of ‘ Africa ’.
“ There are design principles that are vital to lapa construction ,” Deane adds . “ A certified plan is required as the structure is classed as a roof construction . You can contact your local municipality for the regulations pertaining to this . There are also certain rules and regulations with regards to the home owners insurance of your existing dwelling and where you are able to locate the lapa on your property .”
CHALLENGES FACED
The construction of lapas is relatively simple but , like most building projects , it is not without its challenges .
“ All building projects have challenges ,” Deane explains . “ These are overcome by using a reputable and educated team or contractor . Some of the challenges include the construction of the roof and the working out of your cut angles . The thatching of the rafters is tricky and should only be undertaken by a team of qualified thatchers .”
