EDITOR ' S NOTE
It ' s all possible with timber
You don ' t realise just how many people are interested in the timber construction industry until you ' re fighting for a seat at the Wood Conference in Cape Town where this year attendance soared!
It’ s hard not to leave an event like that inspired. The presentations on the multitude of interesting timber projects – not just in the rest of the world, but South Africa as well, truly was mind-blowing at times. And it wasn’ t just me. All the architects and students I chatted to during lunch also agreed.
We seriously underestimate what is possible with timber. But its time is coming locally, so watch this space. There are some really unique projects on the go and we hope to share them with you as soon as they’ re done.
In the meantime, check out what you missed at the seventh Wood Conference that took place in Cape Town in February on page 18.
While I was there, I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Bernelle Verster’ s beautiful( and incredibly sustainable) new house – House Jouissance. My own personal obsession with the concept of‘ jouissance’ made this trip even more enjoyable. Definitely a fitting name for that stunning project. Read more on page 24.
As usual, we also have a variety of interesting, original features – from designing lapas( page 38) to using thatch as a building material( page 35).
It’ s with a heavy heart that I take a moment to bid our staff writer, Kelly-Ann Prinsloo, farewell. She had worked hard over the past few months to put together this magazine and her passion for timber will be missed. I wish her all the best in her future endeavours. For now, I hope you enjoy this edition and find some inspiring ideas along the way. If you do – let us know!
