A Salute to The Late,
Great Tita King
S
he has been known by nicknames such
as the First Lady of Philippine Music (who
composed over a hundred pieces of dif-
ferent genres that ranged from orchestral
works to folk), National Artist (where she
was bestowed the honour in 1989), and
esteemed as a Cultural Entrepreneur who
inspired Filipinos to appreciate, and take
pride in their diverse musical heritage that
blended influences from both East and
West, the ethnic and the contemporary. But above all these
accolades, she was best remembered as the former President
of the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP). She is none
other than the late, great Lucrecia ‘Tita King’ R. Kasilag.
And a very timely tribute took place last September 22 at
the CCP's Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo with two special
shows, Tribute to the King: The Music of National Artist
Lucrecia ‘King’ Kasilag in both matinee and invitational gala
shows.
This homage to Tita King showcased her rich musical legacy
that was vividly brought back to life with performances by the
Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro
Herminigildo Ranera, Ballet Philippines, Bayanihan Philippine
National Folk Dance Company and Philippine Madrigal Singers.
In addition were guest artists such as violinist Gina Medina
Perez, pianists Zenas Lozada, Joed Balsamo, Jet Stephen C.
Chong and Vincent Saavedra, Kabataang Gitarista, Kilyawan
Boys Choir, PWU Indayog Gongs, PWU Vocal Ensemble, Song
Weavers Philippines and UST Guitar Ensemble. The production
also highlighted the special participation of National Artist for
Music Ramon P. Santos, National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes,
artists Fides Cuyugan Asensio, Suzie Moya Benitez and Gener
Karingal.
Tribute to the King was directed by Dexter M. Santos and
scripted by Floy C. Quintos. Set design was provided by Gino
Gonzalez while Meliton Roxas Jr. took charge of the lights
design. Joed Balsamo and Melissa Corazon V. Mantaring were
the program curators.
