TIM eMagazine Vol.2 Issue 7 PCG participates 6-day Regional Workshop in China T he Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre for Asia (MTCC-Asia), a project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the Inter- national Maritime Organization (IMO) hosted the 1st Regional Workshop in Shanghai, China last 17-22 September 2017. The members of the Philippine delegation were Engineer Rodolfo D Paiso (Head of the Directorate for Post Graduate Studies of the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific), Commander Christine Pauline B Diciano PCG (Commander, Coast Guard Internal Auditor) and Lieutenant Commander Fatima Aleli A Angeles PCG (Assistant Deputy Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Marine Environmental Protection, CG-9). The Global Maritime Network (GMN), an EU initiative alloyed the total funding of 10 million euros from January 2016 to Dec 2019 forming five MTCCs. The regional workshop sees that energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission in shipping is a cooperative pursuit to which IMO MARPOL Annex VI being a key driver towards future-ready and low-carbon shipping. Although the Philippines has not ratified Annex VI of the MARPOL convention, there are significant flag state, port state and academic related issues being a maritime, seafaring and shipbuild- ing nation. The increasing demand in capacity building and technology cooperation requires globally coordinated major projects. With Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partner- ships (GLOMEEP) as a strategic opportunity to catalyze capacity building, technology coopera- tion and uptake, the Philippines take its crucial role on these initiatives. The 1st Regional Workshop were participated with 45 representatives from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Turkey, Vietnam, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Korea, Japan, China and the Philippines. The Danish Maritime Authority also sent their representatives along with two MTCC-Caribbean officials.
