Maritime 10 year maritime program unveiled by MARINA I n a bid to map out the future of the maritime industry on a long-term basis, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has recently unveiled its 10-year maritime development program. This new initiative, which will compensate for the absence of such plans that were supposed to be carried out by previous MARINA authorities. Which has also prompted MARINA Administrator CE Marcial Amaro III to come up with the Maritime Development Industry Program (MIDP) which is to be implemented immediately as possible. Prior to its official launching, fine points of the MIDP were tackled, by adopting the following seven-point strategies: *the provision of strong leadership in transforming the Philippines as a major maritime nation; *the acceleration and expansion of domestic shipping services that shall enhance the competitiveness of the country’s economy and spur up businesses, investments and trade within the country; *the building of modern and seaworthy ships through a globally competitive ship building, ship repair and ship breaking industry; *the adherence and transformation of international 18 obligations and responsibilities into national laws; *the promotion and development of the Philippines as a human resource capital for ship management and other maritime services; *the generation of sustainable employment opportunities to uplift existing economic conditions of stakeholders who depend for support and livelihood from the maritime industry; and *the acceleration of economic interactions by implementing regulatory reforms and measures to ease doing business in the maritime industry as well as reducing or eliminating unnecessary regulatory burdens and administrative costs imposed by regulations. Let us support with confidence this MIDP as this very effective means of adding more substance to the local maritime sector which is in drastic need of reforms to boost up its competitiveness in a very fast-growing, global-oriented industry. And, as MARINA launches a series of activities aimed at enhancing this plan, we all can know the Philippines can regain its status a major supplier of competent, professional seafarers in the global maritime industry.
