rice; whole wheat bread; sweetbreads; brains; meat
extracts; internal organs of animals like the kidney and
liver; sardine; anchovies, mayonnaise; gravies; fish roe
(fish eggs); creams; beans; fried potatoes, and potato
chips. Some vegetables and fruits that contain high
levels of uric acid compared to other plant sources
are: cabbage; mushrooms; peas; spinach; asparagus;
cauliflower; strawberries.
The fat and skins of pork, chicken, and beef are high
in low density lipids (LDL) cholesterol which are more
harmful and causes hardening of the arteries. Good fats
contained in plant sources such as coconut and palm
and avocado are high density lipids (HDL).
Increased bad cholesterol in the blood will form
plaques which will be deposited in the intima (inner
portion or lining of the arteries). With continuous
accumulation of cholesterol plaque in the intima will
decrease the lumen or diameter of the blood vessel.
This will cause increased tension of the lumen. This in
turn will result in hypertension or high blood pressure.
In some cases the cholesterol plaque will be dislodge
and the cholesterol plaque can occur in the coronary
or heart vessels causing myocardial infarction (heart
attack). Sometimes the cholesterol plaque will be lodge
in the brain causing cerebral apoplexy or cerebral stroke.
If there is complete occlusion (clogging) of the blood
vessel, it cannot supply anymore nutrients to the heart
muscle. Infarction or necrosis (death of tissue) follows.
If the necrosis is massive, it is fatal and the patient may
die.
The best thing to do is eat and drink in moderation.
Exercise, drink plenty of water (at least eight glasses of
water a day), sleep eight hours each night. Do mental
calisthenics like doing puzzles, read spy books, write
letters, listen to your favorite music. Think happy
thoughts. Smile. Be at peace with all crewmembers,
from the lowliest mess man to the captain. Be
optimistic. And don’t forget to pray, all the time. When
you look up at the heavens and see the horizon of bluegreen waters under the clear blue sky, you will realize
that there is an almighty Being, a benevolent and loving
God looking after us.

F
ilipino sailors deployed overseas remitted
$2.746 billion from January to June this
year, an increase of $223 million or 8.84
percent as compared to the same period
in 2013. The $223 million jump in
remittances from sailors accounted for 36
percent of the aggregate increase of cash transfers
from all overseas Filipino workers, both land and
sea-based. Assuming that our sea-based short-term
contract overseas Filipinos remit the same amount
from July to December,a $5.5 billion remittance
from the sea-based overseas Filipinos is expected
for 2014.
Trade Union Congress of the Philippines
(TUCP) President Ernesto Herrera said the
expected increased in remittance was due to a
boost in hiring.
