Backpacking in the great outdoors is a fulfilling and enjoyable pursuit . I ’ ve hiked mountains in several states and countries , and drunk in the pleasure of grand vistas from mountain tops , secluded pine-needle forests , and towering , ice-cold waterfalls . From the fjords of Norway to the tops of the desert fortress Masada , there is something irreplaceable about the adventure of the journey outdoors .

There are all kinds of trails . On wellworn paths , you can easily follow where many hikers have gone before you . These trails are well-marked , hardpacked , and frequently maintained . You know where you are going and how long it will take you to get there . Yet some trails are less traveled . Brush and thick overgrowth claw back to reclaim the wilderness . Weather and rot lay waste to wooden footholds and handrails . Paths can become difficult and even dangerous .
