There were often many opinions on the application of a particular ordinance or command in the Torah , or on a particular opinion about a particular ordinance or command ( that is , opinions about opinions ).
Over the course of centuries , these debates were organized and collated into thousands of pages of case law , religious practice law , legends and stories , which today is known collectively as Talmud . It has been used for centuries as the central guide for Jewish life . It is how God ’ s commandments have been applied by the rabbis to the specifics of daily life by Jewish people .
Are there flaws and weaknesses in this approach ? Of course , and I ’ ll address some of those in a future article — as well as how Christians have organized and managed some of the same kinds of practical theology in the application of Biblical principles to daily life : Christian case law !
But for now , the simple takeaway is not to demonize Talmud as some kind of competitor for Holy Scripture , but to realize it is an attempt to wisely apply God ’ s Law to daily life .
