During a recent search through national park volunteer positions we discovered an opening in Alaska that was unusual and particularly intriguing: Western Arctic National Parklands in Northwest Alaska posted a notice seeking two backcountry volunteers to assist in gathering information for NPS staff. The position involves periodic 8-day expeditions in a 12-million-acre arctic and sub-arctic wilderness area. The two volunteers would work as a team during a period beginning May 10, 2026, and ending September 30, 2026. Applicants are not required to volunteer for the entire 4½ months, but are expected to agree to fill the position for at least two months. For someone interested in a true wilderness experience the position reads like the dream of a lifetime.
