For over 120 years, downtown Tifton has been home to one of the most storied buildings in the city.

The Syd Blackmarr Arts Center, better known simply as“ The Syd,” has a unique history that can trace its origins back to the early days of Tifton’ s existence.
Sawmill owner Henry H. Tift founded Tifton in 1872. More people began to populate the area as more railways were built, connecting cities like Atlanta to Tifton. In 1890, Tifton officially became incorporated as a city.
Still, Tifton was far from what it is today.
“ It was very much like a Wild West town with wooden buildings, and it was kind of a rough town because of the sawmill crew,” Bruce Green, former executive director of the Tifton Council for the Arts, said.“ There were early accounts that it was kind of like Dodge City, Kansas. There were Saturday night fights, gun shootouts and things like that.”
The Syd stands proudly along Love Avenue in downtown Tifton.
