Happy Father’s Day!
We salute dads and those who have taken up the dad role.
Muhammad Abdullah is my dad – see my eyes are just
like his!
When I think of dad, I think of comfort, safety, no worries
. . . somehow I believe he’s responsible for my princess
disposition
When I was younger, my dad taught me many things.
He taught me to count change by taking the canned
goods out of the cabinets -- we would play ‘store;’ he had conversations
with me about the kings and queens of Africa, about Tibet, Nepal, and
Mt. Everest; and he also told me the ‘still small voice’ – which I now
equate to God’s voice/God’s Spirit.
My dad was active in the lives of our neighbors who didn’t have fathers
around. For the young men, he would encourage them to clean up our
neighborhood, in exchange, he would take them skating. For everyone
else, he bought games and movies for the recreation center; he also
tutored in math.
As I grew, he taught me about the character and habits of people and
tried to shelter me from unscrupulous folk. It took me a long minute to
learn the lesson. I recently had an ‘aha’ moment – ‘ohh - that’s why
Daddy pointed that out – so I could avoid unnecessary rigmarole ’
When I was younger, my dad was on the school board. These days, you
could probably find him reading a book (he’s an avid reader), on the
radio, or ministering to those who are incarcerated. That’s my dad!
