TRAINING
TEAM OREGON is the approved provider of rider training in Oregon, offering motorcycle
safety courses for beginning, returning, experienced, and advanced riders. If you’ve never had a
training course, this is the single best thing you can do for your precision, control, and emergency
maneuvering skills on a bike.
WHO NEEDS TRAINING
New riders 20 and younger are required to take Basic Rider Training (BRT) or eRider™ Basic.
If you’re not in that age category and applying for your first time motorcycle endorsement (new
riders), you are required to take a course. Riders 21 and older may take either a basic course,
Intermediate Rider Training (IRT) or eRider™ Intermediate.
Riders who already have a motorcycle endorsement, including those from other states, are not
required to take a course – although it is encouraged. Check with your insurance carrier to see if a
discount may apply for you taking a refresher or advanced course.
There are beginner, intermediate, advanced and eRider (computer based) training courses available.
The course you should take depends on your age, experience, skill level and license status. If you’re not
sure which course to take, they offer a course selection tool to help out your decision.
Registration all happens online. Select a course first, then choose a location from the map on that
page. View the course schedule for that location, select a date and register. Costs of the training
range from $99 to $199 and take from a half day to 3 days and class times vary depending on
whether you select the a.m. or p.m. group.
TEAM OREGON provides DOT-approved helmets and lightweight training motorcycles for
all courses except ART. The training motorcycles consist of various makes and models of small,
lightweight machines 125-250 cc with seat heights to suit short, medium or tall riders. As far as
scooters go, all courses except ART have a limited number of scooters available for student use. If
a scooter is available, you can reserve it when you register.
Passing the course means you still have to visit the DMV to get your newly minted M endorsement
on your license. Fill out a driver’s license application form in advance and make sure you bring your
course completion card, proper ID and proof of legal presence, and be prepared to take a vision
screening test and pay the DMV fee(s) for the endorsement. DMV waives both state knowledge
and skills tests for BRT graduates. DMV waives only the skills test for IRT, eRider™ Basic and eRider™
Intermediate graduates – students must take the written test at DMV before an endorsement can
be issued. No waivers are provided for RSP or ART. It is highly recommended that you prepare
yourself and read up on the DMV requirements before you head to your local DMV office. You can
bring your own motorcycle with certain requirements:
For basic courses:
The engine size must be 51-250 cc. For intermediate and advanced courses: The engine size
must be at least 51 cc. There is no maximum size limit in these courses.
The bike must have a valid motorcycle license plate. Mopeds or bikes bearing moped license
plates are not allowed. Vehicles with more than two wheels are not allowed.
The motorcycle must be properly insured. You must show current proof of insurance to the
instructor.
The motorcycle must be street legal, in safe riding condition and pass a safety inspection:
Motorcycle tires with adequate tread (recommended 1/8 inch or better) and proper inflation.
Properly functioning front and rear brakes, throttle, clutch, shift lever and final drive.
Working headlight, high beam, taillight with stop lamp, horn and signals.
No leaking or weeping fluids.
Overnight storage at training sites for personal vehicles is not available.
TEAM OREGON courses can be physically and mentally demanding. You need to be able to balance
and ride a bicycle. If you require accommodations related to a physical disability or learning disability,
please contact us prior to registering to discuss your needs at 800-545-9944.
Many other questions are covered in Eligibility Requirements. You can also e-mail your question
to the Training Support Unit at [email protected].
