“Letters to My Father” truly shows
the impact a father has on the life
of his child whether he is present or
not. To read each author’s story and letter
to their father not only gives a glimpse into
the man their father was or wasn’t but also
a look into how that worked into forming who
they were. Even the children of absent fathers
were molded and shaped by their father. The
compiler Tammy Jurnett-Lewis said “When I was
growing up I blamed by father for everything
that I wasn’t. Now that I’m an adult, I thank
him for everything that I am. Had he been in
my life, I’m not sure of the person that I would
be today. I spent half of my life angry with him
and the other half seeking his approval-neither
of which seemed to matter.” In this quote we
see the true power of a father. 5 W

Learning to Love the Hard Way
“Learning to Love the Hard Way” tells
the story so many of us don’t want
to share or even admit to. Growing up
without your biological father leaves children
especially daughters with a void. The void makes
it hard for us to love ourselves, and recognize
love in others. The author Brenda Sissoko has
shared her story of dealing with this void and the
aba ndonment, rejection, self-esteem and self-worth
issues that come from it to help every other woman
who is dealing with the exact same issues. “Living
life as a fatherless, fat, quiet kid proved to be the
ammunition people would use to make hurtful
comments, pick on me and treat me badly. When
I reflect on these times, I realize I really wanted
a father who would protect me from all the mean
people in the world ‘cause that is what dad’s do.”
How many of us are still searching for the father to
protect us from the cruel world? 5 W
