Walking meditation only requires a short path. You might find one that's about 20-30 feet long. Simply walk it, but be relaxed and distanced from outside disturbances. If it’s a straight path you will turn around at the end and continue walking. Finish when you feel called to stop.
However, a circular path can be better for this practice, as it can allow you to calmly settle into a pattern of rhythmic walking. Also, it can keep you more engaged in your practice as you won’t be continuously reminded you’ve reached the end.
You may wish to be aware of your breathing as you continue walking your path. Notice how deeply or shallowly you’re breathing. But, don’t force yourself to breathe in a particular way. Simply notice how you breathe, and whether it seems the same as daily life. Do certain outer life experiences change your breathing rate? Also, notice how your body feels as you walk.
For maximum benefit your walk should be done in silence. This is a meditation. It’s best to have no distractions, so no radio, music player or phone. The less you can carry with you, the better.
As you walk you’ll want to focus inward. Your eyes should be open, but not focused on anything in particular. You should be aware of the path, but you’re not beach combing. You don’t need to be aware of every pebble. Just be safe. Walk with awareness, but your attention will largely be focused inwardly.
As you walk pay attention to thoughts, feelings and sensations that come up. Have compassion for them. You might even thank them and be grateful for them. But, don’t dwell on anything for very long. Let these thoughts go. Keep allowing your body to move forward and step down the path.
