Introduction to Theater
1 Credit • Grades 9 , 10 , 11 & 12
Introduction to Theater offers a comprehensive exploration of the theater in a year-long study . Students will delve into the significance of theater history , gaining insights into its evolution and significance in the present day . The course covers several aspects of theater including : technical elements , basics to acting techniques , dramatic literature , and the fundamentals of theater production , providing students with a holistic understanding of the art form . Through this class , students will acquire a foundational understanding that supports and fosters an appreciation for this art form .
Acting I
1 Credit • Grades 9 , 10 , 11 & 12
Acting I students will focus on the beginning of language , history , and practice of theater and performance . Through class work , viewings , and performing , each student will develop a set of skills that will help them more fully appreciate the processes of telling a story through an acted character speaking scripted dialogue . Class work will include improvisation acting basics , script reading and writing , public performance opportunities , and a focus on story and how the story is performed . On the design side , students will employ a hands-on overview of what is required to support stage productions : A brief introduction to sound , costuming , and makeup that combine for the support of most productions . Please note that this is a performance based course and that outside rehearsals / performances may be required .
Acting II *
1 Credit • Grades 9 , 10 , 11 & 12 Prerequisite : Acting I and / or teacher recommendation
This workshop-based course is for more serious performance students interested in advancing their acting skills . The course will consist of exploratory exercises in scene study , monologue , improvisation , and acting technique . Focus will be given to acting styles and character work using a variety of scripts , both professional and student-written . Both classroom performance and public performance is required . A variety of live and technological performance venues will be explored . Please note that this is a performance based course and that outside rehearsals / performances may be required .
Script Writing & Analysis
0.5 Credit • Grades 10 , 11 & 12
Script Writing & Analysis is a dynamic course that offers students an in-depth exploration into the art of script writing . Throughout this semester-long course , students will gain a comprehensive understanding of script structure , delving into the intricacies of plot , character development , implied and explicit stage directions , and dialogue . Moreover , the class explores the cultural significance of scripts , encouraging students to analyze and appreciate their broader social and historical context . The ultimate goal of the course is for students to harness their newfound knowledge and creativity to craft their own ten-minute play .
Directing *
0.5 Credit • Grades 10 , 11 & 12
Directing is a course designed for students interested in the production side of the theater . Throughout the class , students will acquire foundational knowledge in directing and producing plays , exploring essential elements of stagecraft , casting , blocking , the director ’ s voice & vision , and whole cast and crew collaboration . A highlight of this class is the opportunity for students to apply their skills by directing their own ten-minute play . This course empowers students with a practical understanding of the director ’ s role in shaping the dramatic narrative and fostering creative leadership in the theatrical space . Please note that this is a performance based course and that outside rehearsals / performances are required coursework .
Design for Stage ( Technical Theater )*
1 Credit • Grades 9 , 10 , 11 & 12
Designed for the non-performer , this technical theater course puts the arts student behind the scenes . Performing arts productions can be very collaborative , requiring many specialized skill sets . This workshop class will give students a hands-on overview of what is required to support such a project . Primarily : lighting design , set design and construction , stage management , house management , props design and construction . A brief introduction to sound , costuming and make-up combine for support of most productions .
