The Thornton Academy Arts Department provides a place for students to discover and shape the artist within themselves . We offer comprehensive programming in performing , media , and visual arts . All of our arts courses are shaped around the processes of creating , producing , responding , and connecting . Please note that students are required to have one Fine Arts credit as a part of their graduation requirements .

DANCE
Dance I
1 Credit • Grades 9 , 10 , 11 & 12
Students will learn the basic elements and principles of modern dance from various perspectives . Students will develop skills through directed practice and improvisational exercises and studies . They will learn the language of dance as an expressive medium through the processes of critiquing and refining small and large group dances . Understanding the history and aesthetics of dance will be a part of developing dance literacy . Please note that this is a performance-based course and that outside rehearsals / performances are required coursework .
Dance II
1 Credit • Grades 10 , 11 & 12 Prerequisite : Dance I
Students will focus on expanding movement vocabulary , improving confidence , and developing technical skills , as well as acquiring the knowledge and skills needed for effective performance . The development of 20th-century modern dance will be expanded upon . Students will
