Joining the 1811 Society is a small step we can all make to honor the legacy and the future of Thornton Academy . I realize for people my age , your retirement , let alone your legacy when you ’ re gone , is not something that ’ s high on the priority list - but it ’ s never too early to make choices that can help the organizations you care about .

Thornton Academy is not only where I went to high school but also the place I ’ ve worked at for more than a decade . It ’ s a pleasure to have colleagues who I had as teachers , and see the commitment they make year after year to educate our students at the highest level . In the short time since I graduated , TA has evolved into a top notch institution and the largest high school in Maine .
Working at TA , I get to see the impact that legacy gifts - and all gifts to the Thornton Fund - have on our institution every day . When I walk around campus I see the names of alumni and friends on our buildings and in shared meaningful spaces . I want to invest in the future of TA and our students like many before me have done . I know my Thornton Academy experience was shaped by their generosity and I want to do my part to pay it forward .
I hear all the time from students in the Residential Life Program , who come from more than two dozen countries around the world , that it ’ s not only the diverse offerings but the people who draw them to our campus . I am proud to be part of this community , not only as an alum but as a staff member .
Joining the 1811 Society makes sure that the school can continue providing world-class education to all students , while at the same time maintaining its independence . I encourage all young alumni to consider joining the 1811 Society . It ’ s a small gesture with a lasting reward .
The 1811 Society are individuals who pledge to remember TA in their estate planning . Members understand the important role philanthropy plays in securing the future of the school .
