Golf Team Grabs #1 Spot as Class A
State Champs in 2007-08 Tournament
Thornton Academy’s golf
team won the State Team
Championship last fall, making it
the third top title for the Trojans
in the history of the school.
The tournament took place
Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Natanis Golf
Course in Vassalboro.
It was a sweet moment for
the Trojan golfers, who last year
placed second to Waterville High
School in the state contest by a
single stroke. Coach Mike Verrier
‘74, who teaches math at TA, says
that this season the players truly
cherished every shot and every
putt to bring the team to victory.
They were able to do so with
determination and the drive to do
their very best.
The team total in the contest
was 299, which beat Cheverus
High School’s 308. Having a score
below 300 was a remarkable feat,
and it may be an all-time record
in the state championship’s
history.
The Maine Sunday Telegram
named Eric Angis ’08 and Andrew
Cummings ’10 to its All State
golf team in November, and
Verrier was named Coach of
the Year. The Journal Tribune
similarly named Cummings,
Angis and Verrier to its all-star
team and added Cody Berkowitz
’08 and Steve Patry ’08 to its
championship roster as well.
The other team members
on the varsity team are: Brian
Angis ‘10, Eric Donilon ‘08, Zach
Golojuch ‘10, Max McComish
‘08, James Morse ’09 and Luke
Nielson ‘08.

Boys Compete at Western Maine Class A Basketball
Tournament - Regional Championship Finals
It was an exciting season for
the boys basketball team and
coach Bob Davies as the Trojans made it all the way to the
Western Maine Class A Tournament – Regional Championship
Finals and attempted to claim the
school’s first state title win for
the sport.
TA beat Cheverus High School
during the regular season in a
51-39 game, during which the
Trojans stayed ahead of the competition in points from beginning
to end. Unfortunately, the No. 2
ranked Trojans lost to the Stags
at the Cumberland County Civic
Center during the re-match of the
teams on Feb. 23.
It was a low-scoring game for
a state contest, 40-31, with the
Thornton boys giving their all
against Cheverus’s zone defense.
With 2:09 remaining, Kory Martin brought the team within two
points of Cheverus, but the opponent ultimately scored seven
points from the foul line to take
the win.
Leading up to the game, the
boys basketball team was victorious against No. 3 ranked South
Portland in semifinals, beating
them 58-47.
The varsity boys basketball
team members are: Dakota Green
‘08, Austin Gregory ‘08, Michael
Guerin ‘09, Matt Leach ‘08, Kory
Martin ‘08, James Morse ‘09,
Robert Orr ‘08, Andrew Shaw ‘11,
Keegan Sullivan ‘10, John Trull
‘09, Doug Wilcox ’09 and Jeff
Winnie ‘08.
Fall Athletes Break SMAA All-Academic Record
41 students make the grade
The Southwestern Maine Activities Association has recognized 41 Thornton Academy as all-academic athletes,
setting a new record for the conference. The SMAA began recognizing academic all-star teams in 2000. No more
than 36 students from a participating school had previously received this honor.
Students in the SMAA conference were eligible for this award if they were affiliated with a fall interscholastic
sport and maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or higher during the first six semesters of their high school
careers.
“This is clear evidence that here at Thornton Academy, we emphasize the student part of the term ‘student
athlete,’” Activities Director Gary Stevens said.
Stevens added that he is proud so many students were recognized with the all-academic selections. The record-breaking honor came about due to the large number of seniors who demonstrate outstanding performance
in their classes.
This is just one example of how Thornton Academy emphasizes both classroom learning and overall wellness, Stevens emphasized.
