www.thorntonacademy.org UPCOMING EVENTS Dance Company to Mark 10th Birthday with Alumni Reunion Thornton Academy’s Dance Company is celebrating its 10th year with a daylong reunion of dancing, laughter, food and fun. Formed in 1996-97 by dance teacher Kathy Nolan and students Caron Smith Pelletier ’98 and Amy Levasseur DesRoberts ’97, the Dance Company made its premier performance on December 13, 1996, in Harry P. Garland II Auditorium. While the number of dancers has remained steady since then at 14 to 18 students per year, the Company has grown in many ways, says Nolan. “The company members are incredibly prolific, creating an amazing number of original dances each year,” she says. “We now have much bigger audiences, and they have become more educated about modern dance and more sophisticated in their understanding. “I think we can actually say that our audience has been brought to a higher level of understanding and appreciation,” she adds. “The TA community, as well as the larger Saco/southern Maine community, is far more dance-literate because of the efforts of the TA Dance Company.” The Dance Company reunion is scheduled for Saturday, August 11. The approximately 89 former members of the Dance Company have been invited to the daylong event. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., dancers will have the opportunity to participate in dance workshops, reconnect with other alumni and reminisce about old times in Thornton’s dance studio. In Search of Outstanding Alumni CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The Thornton Academy Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the 2007 Distinguished Alumni and Public Service Awards. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes outstanding lifetime accomplishments of alumni and fosters aspirations in Thornton students. The Public Service Award is given to an alumnus/a who has made outstanding contributions in the areas of public service and volunteerism. Nominees for both awards must have graduated from Thornton at least 10 years ago, and may not be current employees or board members. Nominations must include the reasons the nominee deserves the award, a list of any other awards of honors received and documentation. Nominations must also include the nominee’s name, class year, address and phone number (if living) and the submitting person’s name, class year (if Thornton alumni) address and phone number. Nominations for both awards are due by March 1 and may be mailed to the Thornton Academy Alumni Office. Nominations also may be submitted electronically by visiting Thornton Academy online at www.thorntonacademy.org and click on “Alumni.” For more information and a listing of previous award winners, visit the Thornton Academy Website at www. thorntonacademy.org. 22 TA to Host Blood Drive Among the many community service activities that Thornton Academy students and the Alumni Association co-sponsor each year is the annual Red Cross blood drive. This year’s blood drive is slated for Friday, March 23, in Linnell Gymnasium. Students and faculty may sign up to donate from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., while students from the service club Interact staff the drive. The public is welcome from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., as alumni cover the volunteer slots. Retro TA The Alumni Association is planning a variety show celebrating Thornton’s earlier days with skits, music and dance. The committee is shooting for late October 2007 performance and would love alumni help in getting this great idea going. Get Ready for the 2007 Children’s Winter Carnival The Thornton Academy Alumni Association and Thornton’s many student organizations will sponsor the 6th annual Children’s Winter Carnival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, in Linnell Gymnasium. Student groups, such as Thornton’s boys and girls high school soccer teams, National Honor Society and Latin Club will offer a variety of activities, such as bowling, face painting, crafts, basketball and football throwing and kicking, for younger children ages 2 to 10 to enjoy. The ever-popular Sponge Bob bounce will be on hand, too, along with Tigger and Eeyore. Children purchase game tickets for .25 cents, and have the opportunity to win small prizes by playing some games.
