Dear Alumni, Parents, and
Friends of Thornton Academy,
The mission of Thornton Academy is to prepare students
for a changing world, and this spring has certainly offered
us the opportunity to try to do just that. As we face the
challenges presented by COVID-19, we’ve worked hard to
make important changes to how we offer our educational
programming in order to live that mission during these
unprecedented times.
We have been inspired by the strength and perseverance
shown by our faculty and staff, students and families, and the
greater TA community. Each day that passes demonstrates
how strong we are when we work together; we are confident
that the care and dedication of our community will carry
us through. There is no shortage of examples of learning,
growing, innovating, and succeeding, and we are grateful for
these reminders that our mission is indeed alive and well.
This latest issue of Postscripts is appropriately themed
"Moving Forward Together." Within its pages, you will
read about some of the other changes we have made to our
programs, classes, and campus in anticipation and response
to changes in the world around us. Whether an upgrade in
classroom equipment, or the addition of physical space, we
are working today to make sure Thornton Academy is ready
for tomorrow.
We are so proud of our alumni who continue to embody TA’s
mission in both their personal lives and professional careers.
One such alumnus is Evan Moreshead ’08; his newfound
love of Adventure Racing has taken him around the country
and even overseas to tackle challenging terrain with his
team of fellow racers. You’ll also read about Constantine
Tsomides ’54 whose success and long-time career in
architecture reflects his ability to adapt and respond to
changes in his industry while cultivating community.
In the life of Thornton Academy and the lives our students
and alumni, one thing is certain—progress is impossible
without change. I am extremely thankful to our alumni,
parents, friends, faculty, and staff who invest their time,
talent, and treasure to continually move TA forward. It is
your support that makes it all possible.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to share that we
have postponed our annual Thornton Academy auction due
to the current social distancing recommendations. Instead
of gathering this spring, we will wait until fall to celebrate
and support our students and programs. We hope to see
you then.
Our Thornton Academy community has endured many
challenges over the last 209 years. Throughout our long
history, generations of students, parents, faculty, alumni, and
friends of the Academy have pulled together and relied on
the strength and support of one another to persevere. Today’s
TA community will do the same. I hope you and your loved
ones remain healthy and safe.
Be well,
Rene M. Menard ’88, Headmaster
