MEMBERS Leave a legacy that supports the future of Thornton Academy Hebron Adams * Charles * and M. Virginia * Yates Allard Susanne Robinson McNamara Pauline Smith Bough * Rene M. and Lisa Menard Leo E. and Kathie A. Bourgeault Muriel Thompson Nado Walter Lewis Clark * Mary was born in Dover, NH to Fred and Frances Vibert. She and her elder sister, Barbara, grew up in Somersworth, NH and spent every summer in Saco at their family's beach house in Camp Ellis. In 1937, the family became full- time Saco residents when Mary's father, an executive for Pillsbury, was transferred to the Portland corporate offices. Mary graduated from Thornton Academy where she was a member of the “Sub-Deb” sorority and was voted most attractive and flirtatious of her class. After graduating from TA, she studied psychology and business at Westbrook College where she began dating Gordon Pendleton ’48. After marrying Gordon in 1952, Mary worked as a customer service supervisor at “Ma Bell” (the phone company). After Gordon's retirement in 1981, the Pendletons purchased Garside's Ice Cream on Ferry Road. Mary and their son Eric took over operations after Gordon’s death in 1994. Mary enjoyed being a business owner and mentor to her staff, comprised mostly of TA students. Mary is survived by her son Eric (Boston) and nieces Joanna Hanson Flanders (Scarborough, ME) and Bethany Hanson (St. Augustine, FL). Thornton Academy will remember Mary's contributions to the Saco community and her consistent support of the programs at TA. I joined the 1811 Society out of appreciation and a desire to foster and provide in some way opportunities for the students of today and the future. Thornton Academy has been so important to our family. The school was everything to my mother, Helen Mitchell Atkinson (1914). For a young woman at that time, TA opened so many doors and allowed her to set bigger goals and dream bigger dreams. The dining commons is named in her memory and pays tribute to the special place TA held in her heart. Bill and I are so proud of TA and many of the programs it has in place - the Headmaster's Fund to assist students in need, the Unified Basketball Team which allows special needs students to experience the thrill of athletic competition, and the diversity and opportunities the international boarding program brings to our local students. Thornton Academy is a special place. It is an honor and privilege for us to be in a position to leave a legacy that supports the future of TA and its students.” - Mary Atkinson Johnson ’51 Carl J. and Barbara Stasio, Jr. Michael and Susan Grenier Strout Stanley and Mary Ladd Tucker Milton * and Joan Vachon Victor Agnes Ann Walsh Erwin and Yvette L. * Warren Interested in learning more about the 1811 Society?
