ALPHONSUS POLACKWICH CLASS OF 1939

Just before his death in September, 2017, Alphonsus‘ Al’ Polackwich asked about his family’ s well-being and their ability to carry on without him. After being assured that he had indeed provided security for his family, he said in a quiet voice,“ I did a good job.” Always putting his family at the forefront of his efforts, he also made a permanent mark on his community through a successful career and extensive community service.
While a student at Thornton Academy, Al played on the football and golf teams and was voted“ Class Wit” for the class of 1939.
Al joined the U. S. Army to fight in World War II as a mechanic in the Second Armored Division, also known as“ Hell on Wheels.” Al’ s Division fought in many battles, working to liberate Central Europe and France.
Upon his return from the war, Al married Eleanor Scott. The couple had two sons, Robert ' 65 and Alan ' 69. In his career, he moved up through many promotions at the Maremount Corporation in Saco, ultimately becoming the head of the entire plant with the title of Vice President- Plant Manager.
Al also made a lasting impression on the Saco- Biddeford community through his community service, serving as chairman / president of numerous organizations.
Al was predeceased by his wife Eleanor and son Robert. He is survived by his son Alan and wife Deb, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
