TA T R E A S U R E On campus clothing bank keeps students in need warm Students modeling clothing available in Cinderella's Closet located in Thornton Hall. “ It was an idea from Jennifer Merry, Joan Folker, and myself,” Mary Ann Stickles Martin ’78 says with a smile as she begins the story of the beginning of Cinderella’s Closet. “We wanted to do something to help girls who could not afford prom dresses.” Cinderella’s Closet began with dresses donated from members of the Thornton Academy community, including the former Main Street business, Simply You. Over 60 dresses were collected in the first year and one Saturday, Martin, Merry, and Folker invited students and parents to try on dresses for their senior prom. Though the initial turnout was not what they expected, the trio persisted, realizing there was a greater need for Thornton students. “We realized kids had a need for clothes, warm jackets, and boots,” Martin said. The women began reaching out to friends on Facebook and emailing the community for support. Everything from jackets and suits to boots and general clothing have been donated to help students who attend Thornton Academy. Currently, Sally Cody serves as the “fairy godmother” to the closet, giving students access during the day as needed. Martin shares that she is grateful for all of the assistance that the community contributes to this special cause, “There are kids who have a lot of hardship. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, and everybody needs a little help now and then. If there is a student in need, they can see a school counselor or other trusted adult.” To make a donation to Cinderella's Closet, please contact Mary Ann Martin at [email protected] or call 207.602.4454 Story by Brittany Brown· Photo by Brittany Brown 15
